The station

Since 1936, Alpe d'Huez has grown up on the Grandes Rousses massif, at an altitude of 1,860 m. The Pic Blanc, at 3,330 m, offers a breathtaking panorama, rated 3 stars in the Michelin Guide, of the Ecrins National Park and its prestigious peaks, the Rateau, the Meije, the Muzelle, the Aiguilles d'Arves, the Belledonne chain and Mont Blanc.

A landscape covering almost 1/5th of France, from Italy to the Massif Central.

Situated on the grassy plateau of the massif's southern face, the climatic resort of Alpe d'Huez, aptly named l'Ile au Soleil, enjoys generous sunshine and a particularly active microclimate.

The surrounding villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, La Garde, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas are the guarantors of mountain life. The roots of the "Gens d'en Haut" can be found here. The traditions of the Oisans are expressed in its gastronomy and rural life, which is reflected in the transhumance of some 370 cows and 2,000 sheep that graze on the 10,000 hectares of pasture that become ski slopes in winter. So, the reason for maintaining this tradition is twofold: the d'Huizats have always grazed their flocks on these mountain pastures, giving the resort its name: the "alpe" of the village of Huez. And as a result, these herds have a role to play in "grazing" the ski area. By clearing away the wild grass, they prevent avalanches from building up during the first snowfalls.

With its wealth of sporting (hiking, flying, biking, horse-riding, etc.), cultural and leisure activities, Alpe d'Huez is also the setting for events strong all winter and summer long!
